Review by Mr. Marcello Cazzaniga, owner of Camaver Kunsthaus (camaver.it), following the exhibition ‘El Duende’, Bellano (It), July 2017
The artist’s poetry and the exhibition El Duende:
The artist expresses himself through photography, he himself defines his style as photographic impressionism. He uses light as if it were colors distributed in blurred brushes.
The themes discussed are mainly the natural representation, the Nordic landscape of the plains of the Netherlands and Denmark, which seem to emit a silent silence, a suspended and fairy atmosphere.
Jacob (Jaap) Berghoef’s works are works that enhance the simplicity of nature but which nevertheless stimulate our senses in a unique way; the exaltation of some details drives the observer to seek a deeper contact with nature and with his soul.
Light is the great protagonist of these photographs as it defines shadows and nuances. It is in these shadows that you find the interesting part of these works, the psychological introspection, the idea that there is something beyond the appearance at the end of a path at the end of the horizon.
That shiver we feel in front of these visions is the Duende that manifests itself in us, is that recondite aspect of art that causes something in us that we do not know how to codify but which makes us excited.
This simple life artist merely transmits his love for nature and his vision of a simple everyday life, but it is not a life full of mystery and wonder. Berghoef succeeds in trapping the essence of Duende, the contrast and the inevitable and indispensable relationship between light and shadow.
