In Spanish arts, duende or tener duende (“having duende”) loosely means having soul, a heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity, often connected with flamenco. The artistic and especially musical term was derived from the duende, an elf or goblin-like Magic creature in mythology. El duende is the spirit of evocation. It comes from inside as a physical/emotional response to art. It is what gives you chills, makes you smile or cry as a bodily reaction to an artistic performance that is particularly expressive.
In mythology, a duende is a fairy- or goblin-like creature from Spanish and Portuguese, South American, Chamorro and Filipino folklore. Duendes may also have some traits similar to goblins and kobolds.
In some Latin American cultures, the Duendes are believed to be forest spirits, helpers of people who get lost in the forest so they could find their way home.
For me, this series of three forest photos -all three made in The Netherlands- represent the forest spirit Duende.
A breeze of light
touches my path
The light dances between the trees,
drawing the leaves with thin lines
swiftly blown away by the wind.
Duende was the first photo with vertical movement in the Intentional-Camera-Movement-experiment on an analog camera.
I made Duende on a sunny morning on a path in a forest, close to my house in The Netherlands.
The analog landscape photos (horizontal movement) you’ll find in the series Whispering in silence
