It’s early in the morning, I’m walking through the streets of an old city. Although the streets are deserted, everything is breathing the bustling activity that has taken place for centuries and often still takes place. Sparkling of life, sparkling of light on a sunny day.
‘Wander through streets of light’ is a photo in the gallery ‘Lost cities‘.
I made the photos in this small series early in the morning in the old city of the city of Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
This old part of the city is called ‘Benedenstad’ (Down Town), it is literally up to 20 meters below the adjacent city center. Winding streets with buildings of sometimes hundreds of years old, take you to the past. During the Second World War, large parts of this district were destroyed in a bombing. During the rebuilding, much attention has been paid to architecture that fits the ancient facades. As often with these types of projects, there are a lot of different opinions on how successful that has been done.
