Fleeing winds

Last weekend we traveled to southeastern Sweden for a holiday in the house of a friend, who is visiting her Dutch family. I made this photo on the south coast of Sweden during our ride to her house. There was a hard, stormy wind, that raged over the water and the land, as if fleeing for an even stronger force.

There is a big difference in character between ‘our’ North Sea coast and the Swedish coast on the Baltic Sea.

The beaches are wide in north-west Denmark. The waves that have been born somewhere on the ocean, viciously collapse on the base of the high dunes. Wind and water are rough, hard, tangible. The few trees that are there grow crooked and stay small. The view is therefore wide everywhere. There is little shelter.

Here on the Swedish coast we see narrow beaches. On the water short and small waves, even in the strong wind. There is no real surf: due to the gently sloping bottom of the sea, the waves break several times in succession, before they reach the coast. Mediterranean-like pine trees almost stand with their feet in the brackish water and reach to the sky. There are no dunes, and grass and reeds can grow right up to the water.
